Most uPVC pipes have installed underground or under cover, exposed piping applications are steadily increasing. Extensive testing, under rigorous laboratory conditions and in the field in tropical, sunlight has proved that, uPVC pipes which are exposed to direct sunlight for more than 6 months is likely to loose it's color the impact strength is also reduced. But the tensile strength remains unaltered. Tests have shown that the color lose is limited to a depth of 0.15mm after approximately 12 months. The fact that tensile strength is not a affected means the pressure rating of uPVC pipes and fittings remain constant. Reduction in pipe impact strengthwas apparent after two years of exposure to weathering and ultraviolet radiation. However considering the high impact strength of uPVC the reduction is not significant enough to warrant concern. These laboratory findings are reinforced by the excellent performance achieved by pipes in actual installation. Especial additives are added to PVC to make pipe and fittings resistant to ultraviolet effects applying coating is also suggested to block the ultraviolet radiation from affecting the uPVC pipe. The most common coat, which is used for above ground service, is water-based latex paint.
